Our History & Story

Lake Carlos Villas has been a cherished lakeside destination since the early 1980s. What makes us unique is our cooperative model—18 units owned and managed by our members, with no outside developers or high-pressure sales. Every decision is guided by people who love the Villas, ensuring that our community remains focused on relaxation, quality, and authentic Minnesota hospitality. Set along the shoreline of beautiful Lake Carlos, the Villas were designed to embrace year-round enjoyment. From summer afternoons spent swimming, fishing, or golfing, to winter days filled with ice fishing, skiing, and snowmobiling, this has always been a place where families and friends gather to create lasting memories. Our mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units makes it possible for couples, families, and groups alike to find a comfortable home away from home. The resort is more than just a place to stay—it’s a community. With an indoor pool, outdoor pool, hot tub, and clubhouse, there are spaces for both relaxation and connection. Over the decades, members have cared for and improved the property while preserving its charm and welcoming spirit. Our “no pets, no smoking” policy helps us keep the Villas comfortable and enjoyable for all. Of course, our story is also part of a much bigger one. Lake Carlos itself has a rich history. The lake’s name dates back to early 19th-century Ojibwe roots, recorded during the Henry Schoolcraft Expedition of 1832. The surrounding area quickly became a gathering place, with the nearby City of Carlos officially platted in 1903. Lake Carlos State Park, just a short drive away, was established in 1937 and remains a beloved recreational spot for both locals and visitors. Together, the Villas, the lake, and the surrounding community tell a story of tradition, nature, and togetherness.
